We all know it by heart, some of us even with muscle memory. Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A. Timeless and iconic, the Konami Code sees use even to this day.
Today, however, we have to pay our respects, as Kazuhisa Hashimoto, creator of the code, passed away at 61.
We are saddened to hear about the passing of Kazuhisa Hashimoto, a deeply talented producer who first introduced the world to the “Konami Code”.— Konami (@Konami) February 26, 2020
Our thoughts are with Hashimoto-san’s family and friends at this time. Rest In Peace. pic.twitter.com/vQijEQ8lU2
His death was announced by Yuji Takenouchi, game composer and friend to the developer.
The now-ubiquitous code found life in early Konami shooter Gradius when Hashimoto found the game to be too demanding for his taste during testing.
Since then, the code has seen use everywhere, a symbol of cheaters everywhere.
We offer our condolences to Hashimoto’s friends and family. Now we lift our controllers to a legend.
