YouTube channel Spawn Wave (a typically reliable conveyor of video game rumors) reported on earlier that Resident Evil 3 remake is in active development at Capcom. Also, Video Game Chronicles is reporting that they have also been told this through various sources.
The reason this is kinda possible is that Resident Evil 3 remake would be able to use assets, mechanics, and the RE engine from Resident Evil 2 remake.
Another reason for the speculation is that the original PlayStation version of Resident Evil 3 released the year after its predecessor and RE3 will be celebrating its 21st anniversary in 2020. (Hint: 2019 is the 21st anniversary of Resident Evil 2.)
RE2 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi has previously state that Capcom would consider more Resident Evil remakes if fans “voice their enthusiasm”.
It’s safe to say that with Resident Evil 2 remake approaching 5 million units sold, winning Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards, and now being a nominee for Game of the Year and other categories at The Gaming Awards; the hype for a remake title is definitely there.
This could very well also be part of the Project Resistance experience if the rumors turn out to be true. We do know that Project Resistance will have a single-player campaign that could/not be part of the multiplayer we’ve seen.
It’s all still rumor at this point, but we will be watching closely as The Game Awards draw near. This would make an excellent time for Capcom to announce a remake. So take it with a grain of salt, we can dream… can’t we?
